Growth-arrested rat embryonic fibroblasts were either (1) mock-treated, (2) infected with PRV Becker at 5 pfu/cell, (3) treated with 1000 U/ml rat IFN beta, or (4) simultaneously infected with PRV Becker and treated with IFN. Two timepoints were tested: 3 and 12 hrs post treatment. At 12 hrs, a large subset of genes that were induced 3-fold or more by IFN relative to their levels in mock-treated cells was not induced when the cells were simultaneously infected with PRV. Expression of transcripts associated with MHC class I antigen presentation and NK cell activation was reduced while transcipts associated with inflammation were unaffected or were induced by viral infection.
